Continuity Clinics
Residents in the University of Utah categorical pediatric program spend two half days each week in a primary care practice.
Residents who train in our Triple Board or Med-Peds program spend one half day per week in a pediatric clinic and one half day
in either a child psychiatric or medicine clinic. Residents acquire a panel of patients and follow them throughout their residencies.
Our program offers several unique and rewarding continuity experiences at the South Main Clinic,
Teen Mother and Child Program, the University Hospital - Pediatric Clinic, and Private Practices throughout the Salt Lake Valley.
Several Utah clinic sites participate in the Reach Out and Read program
(www.reachoutandread.org).

The South Main Clinic, located in the central part of the valley, provides care for the under-served of Salt
Lake City. South Main Clinic is the program's largest continuity site. A substantial number of families seen at this
clinic speak no English. Spanish is the most common other language spoken; most of the staff speak Spanish. Spanish
translators assist staff and residents. Residents with continuity clinics at South Main have the opportunity to see
well children, as well as children with acute illnesses, and to closely follow medically complex patients, many of
whom live in socially challenging situations. The faculty in this clinic, in addition to being outstanding general
pediatricians, has expertise in behavior and development, infectious disease, and public health. In 2005 the Clinic
won the Ambulatory Pediatric Association's award for Health Care Delivery.
Teen Mother and Child Program
The Teen Mother and Child Program, a multi-disciplinary clinic housed at the South Main Clinic,
provides prenatal and postnatal care to
pregnant and parenting teens and comprehensive pediatric care to
their children. The clinic provides experiences in well child care, acute
pediatric care, family planning, adolescent medicine and gynecology. Residents
can see large numbers of patients and build a panel of continuity patients,
many of whom have complex medical and social problems.
University Hospital - Pediatric Clinic
The continuity site at the University Hospital - Pediatric Clinic, located in the University Hospital
adjacent to Primary Children's Medical Center, is a general outpatient clinic that serves a diverse patient population.
Residents are matched with pediatric faculty preceptors who supervise teams of two to four residents. Residents become
the primary care providers in this setting and gain close relationships with the families they serve.
Patients from a variety of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds are seen for well child care, chronic illness, and
complex medical problems.
Private Pediatric Practice
Residents who anticipate entering practice careers can consider establishing their continuity clinic in a
Private Pediatric Practice site. In this option, residents are paired with experienced community pediatricians in
group or small practices in the Salt Lake Valley and adjacent communities. Currently, 23 practices serve as continuity
clinic sites for residents in our program. Residents who choose to work in a pediatric practice learn directly how
private practice works. Residents have the opportunity to see many well children as well as children with acute medical
or psychosocial issues.
