Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at the University of Utah/Primary Children's Medical Center (PCMC) is a three year program that provides fellows the training needed to ensure future academic success. Specifically, the fellowship offers a comprehensive program that emphasizes the following four areas: clinical, scholarly activity, teaching and administration. The 19 faculty members of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine are committed to training academic pediatric emergency physicians. Utilizing the experience, knowledge and varying interests of these faculty members, the fellowship includes a formal career mentoring program with advice and guidance offered through the three year program.

The fellows receive superb training in the clinical setting. In addition to time spent in the pediatric emergency department, all fellows rotate two months in the pediatric intensive care unti gaining additional experience in managing critically ill patients. Fellows entering the pediatric emergency medicine training program after a pediatric residency spend one month a year treating adult emergency patients at the University of Utah Hospital. Those entering via emergency medicine complete pediatric subspecialty clinics and neonatal/nursery rotations. Additional clinical experience is gained through the required electives of toxicology and pediatric anesthesia. Other elective rotations round out the fellow's clinical experience.

The clinical experience is complemented by instruction in research design and methods, leading to original research projects. Faculty physicians in the division provide mentoring and serve as a rich source of research ideas. A Scholarship Oversight Committee is set up for each fellow to mentor progress in scholarly activity. A major goal of the fellowship is the completion of a well-designed study that is published in a peer reviewed journal.

In addition to the research and clinical aspects of academic Pediatric Emergency Medicine, fellows gain teaching and administrative experience. Didactic leactures, various responsibilities, and opportunities, including a quality improvement project, allow fellows to acquire essential skills in teaching and administration.
