Pediatric Residency Program

Fellowships

Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Fellowship

The goals of the fellowship training program in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Utah include the following:

  1. Prepare physicians for careers in academic pediatric gastroenterology.

  2. Provide comprehensive training in gastrointestinal, nutritional, and hepatic disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.

  3. Provide training in human subjects research with completion of a mentored scholarly project.

Clinical training is at Primary Children's Medical Center, a 282-bed, freestanding children's hospital located adjacent to the University of Utah Medical Center with a referral area that encompasses Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado. Existing subspecialty clinical programs include inflammatory bowel diseases, nutritional disorders, dysphagia, feeding disorders, liver transplantation, liver disease care, and general gastrointestinal disorders. The liver transplantation program has been in existence since 1996, and averages 10 transplantations per year. Annual volumes include 1500 endoscopic procedures, 2000 outpatient visits, and 500 GI service admissions. Ongoing research programs include genetic epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, prevention of progression of polyps in familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome, feeding disorders in children with special healthcare needs, and eosinophilic esophagitis.

Research training is focused on human subjects research. Potential projects include translational science, health outcomes, health policy, and epidemiology of pediatric gastrointestinal, nutritional, and hepatic disorders in infants, children, and adolescents. Trainees are expected to design, perform, and report a mentored scholarly project during their training. Program graduates are expected to be able to interpret and critique the majority of human subject research literature in pediatric gastroenterology.
