Fellowships
Child Neurology Fellowship
The University of Utah child neurology training program provides in-depth neuroscience and clinical training that enables graduates to engage in productive, independent careers in academic or clinical child neurology. Trainees at the University of Utah profit from the fact that Primary Children's Medical Center provides care to virtually all children in the Intermountain West (all of Utah and parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and Colorado) with neurologic disorders. Trainees with interest in clinical child neurology can participate in the Utah Leadership and Education in NeuroDevelopmental Disabilities (ULEND) program, which provides didactic and experiential education in medical ethics, quality assurance, health care organization, and health care financing. Trainees anticipating research careers receive release time to work with a research mentor and to attend the Department of Pediatrics academic preparation course providing education in manuscript preparation, scientific lecturing, biostatistics, and research ethics.
The program has seven faculty with subspecialty interests in neurologic infections and headache (Dr. Jim Bale), movement disorders and tuberous sclerosis (Dr. Fran Filloux, Division Chief), epilepsy (Drs. Colin VanOrman and Joel Thompson), stroke (Dr. Sue Benedict), multiple sclerosis (Dr. Mike Lloyd), developmental neurobiology (Dr. Joshua Bonkowsky), experimental neurophysiology (Dr. Jeffrey Eckstrand) and neuromuscular disorders/neurogenetics (Dr. Kathy Swoboda). The program accepts one trainee per year through the national child neurology matching program.
