Paid Leave

Paid leave includes three weeks (21 calendar days) of vacation, sick leave (maximum 12 days) and educational leave (maximum 5 calendar days) with individual approval. PL-1's receive two weeks of vacation during the year and their third week between the PL-1 and PL-2 years. Holiday schedules allow residents additional time off. Pregnant residents receive paid maternity leave of up to six weeks that may include vacation time, sick leave, and elective time. The program ensures that residents who take time off remain eligible for the American Board of Pediatrics examination.

Insurance

Residents have the choice of health insurance plans. Premium costs are shared between the University Hospital and the houseofficer for health coverage for the resident and family. Group dental insurance for the resident and family is available at a nominal charge per month. Group term life insurance in the amount of $25,000 is provided at no charge. Additional life insurance up to a maximum of $350,000 may be purchased. Malpractice insurance is covered by the hospital for professional activities that are an approved part of the training program, and disability insurance is also provided. Additional options may be purchased by the resident.

Meals and Housing

Meals are provided to on-call residents required to spend the night in the hospitals as part of their training. Overnight accommodations are available in the hospitals for the on-call resident. Nearly all residents choose to live in nearby homes or apartments. House and condominium costs in the Salt Lake Valley enable many residents to purchase housing.

Education, Licensing and Research Expenses

All residents have a $1,000 education fund to be used over three years at their discretion for meetings, books, journals, and other educational materials. The costs of DEA license, Utah medical license, and medical license renewal fees, are paid by University Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics. Residents are encouraged to participate in individual research projects and to attend scientific meetings. Up to five days of educational leave per year may be taken with program director approval. Expenses incurred in association with scientific presentations by a resident at a meeting are paid by the department.

Parking

Parking is provided free of charge to residents by the Department of Pediatrics in the parking garage adjacent to PCMC.

Medical Records, Library and Computer Access

All residents have access to a fully staffed pediatric medical library at PCMC. Medical records at Primary Children's Medical Center of becoming fully electronic. A centralized database allows residents to access medical information on all patients seen at Intermountain Healthcare clinics and hospitals within the state of Utah. Email is provided for all residents through the University of Utah.

Other Benefits

Other benefits, such as reduced tuition for spouses, bookstore and athletic event discounts, and use of recreation facilities are available to residents. Residents qualify for reduced-cost season passes at some Utah ski areas. All residents have access to networked computers, medline, and e-mail. Recognizing that depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or marital and family stress can occur during training, the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Medicine provide preventive, consultative and referral services through the Employee Assistance Program. Mental health counseling is available through the Department of Psychiatry. You can obtain additional information about the program from the Graduate Medical Education Office.
